NFC Notes: Buccaneers, Falcons, Packers

Buccaneers

• Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that while it’s unlikely the Buccaneers will cut QB Jameis Winston, it’s possible this could be a consideration for the team after the 2018 season, especially if they elect to move on from GM Jason Licht and/or HC Dirk Koetter.
• The Buccaneers picked up Winston’s fifth-year option a few months ago, which will run them $20.9 million for the 2019 season. Florio mentions that the risk for the Buccaneers is that if Winston sustains an injury this season, his entire 2019 salary becomes guaranteed in March.
• According to Jenna Laine, there haven’t been any rumblings about the Buccaneers moving on from Winston up to this point. Laine also notes that Tampa Bay already owes him $3.89 million for the 2018 season, which means unless they try to trade him before the start of the regular season, he’s going to be a Buccaneer this year.

Falcons

On Monday, the Falcons signed veteran S Ron Parker to a one-year contract (NFLTR).

Parker said shortly after the move was announced by the Falcons that he feels like Atlanta was a “great fit” for him and is in position to compete for a Super Bowl.

“What drew me here is that I’ve seen it’s a great fit,” Parker said, via AtlantaFalcons.com. “They’ve got a great team — got great guys, all around. Special teams, defense, offense. I just think the organization fits my style. I’ve got some relationships with the coaches in here — Dan Quinn and Marquand [Manuel]. I saw them early in my career when I was in Seattle, so we have good background history just from knowing each other. I think this is a good organization for me to be with. Couple of steps off from winning the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, and I think we’re that close to getting it this year.”

Packers

Packers HC Mike McCarthy admitted that they’re going to employ a running back by committee approach this season between Aaron Jones, Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams.

While this will impact the amount of reps each running back gets, Montgomery seems to think it could benefit the unit as a whole.

“That’s what you want,” Montgomery said, via Packers.com. “You want to know your teammates — even though you’re all fighting for a job — you want to know no matter who’s in the game, that guy is going to get the job done. If Aaron’s in the game or Jamaal’s in the game or I’m in the game, we all bring something different, and everything that we bring has been effective. You want that. You want depth, you want versatility. I’m excited for what this room brings to the table.”
