NFC Notes: Cowboys, Giants, Lions

Cowboys

Cowboys HC Jason Garrett said Thursday that WR Tavon Austin (groin) is on track to return this week.

“He’s just a really good player,” Garrett said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s an explosive player. That’s why we brought him here. I think when you saw him early on in the year, before he got hurt, you saw elements of that, as a return guy, but also as an offensive player. We’ve handed the ball to him; we’ve thrown it to him; he’s returned stuff for us, and he’s made plays. That’s what he’s really done throughout his career.

  • Todd Archer notes that Cowboys RT La’el Collins will earn a $2 million escalator that will bump his 2019 salary to $8.5 million since he will have played in at least 85 percent of the snaps.
  • According to Archer, Cowboys C Joe Looney has earned a $250,000 incentive for playing in at least 85% of the snaps.
  • Cowboys S Jeff Heath has earned $500,000 for playing in more than 75% of the snaps this season.

Giants

Giants LT Nate Solder said the expectation that he was going to step in and be the “answer to all the problems” for their offensive line.

“I think it was a little bit of a set up in terms of the way it was all portrayed as ‘This is the answer to all the problems,‘” Solder said, via Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com. “I never knew that because I’ve always worked hard and I’ve always tried to get better. I know what it was. Now people inside of this building start to understand what it is, too: That it’s never perfect. You are always working toward it and there are no superhuman people out there. We’re all doing the best we can.”

Lions

Lions S Glover Quin, who has one year left on his contract, said he has not decided whether he will continue his career in 2019.

I don’t know. We’ll see,” said Quin, via Dave Birkett of Detriot Free Press.

When asked if he would play with another team if the Lions released him this offseason, Quin said: “I don’t know. Depends on the situation.”

  1. That’s the reason Belichick and Co. let Solder go to free agency. You’re seeing first hand the 1st round talent he is NOT. The left side of the line is worse with Solder and Hernandez. Remember! The GMEN had NO run game under McAdope and Flowers became the focal point of the blame.
Now! According to Solder it is a whole process. WAKE UP MAN!!! Solder could NOT STOP a sneeze. When you can’t block your man on Manning to Barkley check downs, you got problems. PERIOD!!! And for the first 8 or 9 games that IS all Manning’s offense consisted of were CHECKDOWNS! In my opinion! The center, left guard and left tackle positions need to be OVERHAULED! There’s a center on the GMEN roster out of SMU, a rookie named Evan Brown. He was a beast at this year’s NFL Combine. Give Brown a chance. Chad Wheeler and Jamon Brown are keepers. Draft Jonah Williams and trade Hernandez and Solder. Solder has an out in his contract after next season, which may appeal to another NFL team. Hernandez does NOT look like a 34th pick at all, he could have dropped to the mid 3rd or 4th rounds this year and would have been a logical choice then. I thought Rhett Ellison was signed to help in line support, blocking on the edges. YET! Putz Shurmur has him catching passes and Evan Engram is used in blocking schemes. REALLY! Engram has 4.3 speed and he’s BLOCKING! Now Putz Shurmur uses him more, because OBJ is on the shelf. It doesn’t matter anyway. Because 2019 will be the same as 2018. LOSING! Because the roster will be changed once again with an influx of draft picks and free agent(s). And according to Putz Shurmur and Nate “The Not So Great” Solder it is a learning process. And you know what happens with a whole new roster of new-bees? ANSWER: You got it! The LEARNING CURVE becomes a factor. I see another 4-6 win season next year. And then the CLAMORING for Putz Shurmur’s head will begin. BELIEVE IT!
