NFC Notes: Eagles, Eli Manning, Giants

Eagles

  • Eagles QB Nick Foles said of his rib injury: “A little bit of soreness but every day drastically improving … I feel great.” (Zack Rosenblatt)

Giants

Giants GM Dave Gettleman declined to commit to QB Eli Manning for the 2019 season, but was complimentary of his ability and statistics from this past year.

“I’m committed to making the best decision in the interest of the New York Football Giants,” Gettleman said, via ESPN.com. “OK, I know that you guys want answers now, but very frankly I didn’t come in [New Year’s Day]. I’m going to do what I do, which is get in my office and watch film. … My commitment is to make this team the best team it can be. And if that happens to have Eli playing quarterback, it does.

Gettleman and Manning had an extensive “no-holds barred” conversation on Monday that was ultimately initiated by Manning.

“We left it at [being a fluid situation],” Gettleman said. “We had a great conversation. He’s a mensch.”

Giants

  • When asked if he has any doubts about being back with the Giants next season, OLB Olivier Vernon said: “That’s really out of my hands right there. All I’m really focusing on is today. Happy New Year to everybody.” (NJ.com)
  • Giants veteran OLB Connor Barwin clearly wasn’t happy with his playing being dramatically reduced towards the end of the season: “It’s obviously got to be a situation where I play. So, we’ll see what happens. I started five games when [Olivier Vernon] was out, and then essentially didn’t play until the very end. I played against the Bears when Lorenzo [Carter] didn’t play, but then I played token six snaps. I have a little more left than that.” (Matt Lombardo)
