NFC Notes: Falcons, Saints, Seahawks

Falcons

Free agent addition Brandon Fusco has beat out Wes Schweitzer for the Falcons’ starting right guard job, according to HC Dan Quinn.

“Fusco has certainly done a good job to have earned that spot,” Quinn said, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “What a competitive battle between him and Wes. That’s why you see Wes some more at center moving forward. As an interior three player, Wes has the ability to play center, right guard and left guard. He’ll be an important part of what we do. I love his competitive style.

Saints

Saints DC Dennis Allen admitted that they’re still trying to determine what role first-round DE Marcus Davenport will have this season.

“I think that’s still to be determined,” Allen said, via Nola.com. “Certainly, we didn’t draft him just to be a situational pass rusher. We drafted this guy to be an every-down player, so that’s what we’re working to do, to try to get him ready to do that. We’ll continue to put him in those situations, and hopefully he’ll be ready to answer the challenge.”

  • Regarding their trade for QB Teddy Bridgewater, Saints GM Micky Loomis said: “We are very pleased to obtain a young player with quite a bit of playing experience in Teddy Bridgewater. He’s a successful quarterback and we know he will be a great addition to our quarterback room.”

Seahawks

Seahawks HC Pete Carroll explained their interest in trading for Packers QB Brett Hundley.

He’s played quite a bit and started a bunch of games last year,” Carroll said of what they like about Hundley, per Brady Henderson. “We’ve been able to really see how he’s developed and we liked him coming out of college as well. He’s big, he runs well, he’s got a good arm, he’s got good vision of the field, he’s made a lot of big throws and big plays. He really gives you the thought that he could come in the game and keep it moving. So we thought it was just too good of an opportunity to pass up, and hopefully we’ll be able to complete it.

  • Carroll said that LB K.J. Wright‘s knee surgery went well and they hope is he is out only a couple weeks. (Bob Condotta)
  • According to Carroll, veteran DE Erik Walden has a hip flexor issue and they’re hoping Tedric Thompson recovers quickly and is ready for the regular season opener. (Bob Condotta)
