NFC Rumors: 49ers, Buccaneers, Cowboys, Giants

49ers

49ers GM John Lynch mentioned that being featured on “Hard Knocks” isn’t something they would be excited about.

“It’s not something we would be really excited about,” Lynch said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I love the show, but I think some things are best left behind closed doors. I fundamentally have a problem with cutting players and things of that nature (on camera). It’s not something we’d be thrilled about.

Buccaneers

Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.com explained that the Buccaneers’ decision to announce that they’re sticking with Dirk Koetter last week was a clear sign that they had finished second in the running to hire Jon Gruden.

“That’s what you want to put out there when you finish second,” Kaufman said, via Pro Football Talk. “When you go at bat and you strike out.

“By Friday, Oakland had emerged as a major player, talking to Gruden’s agent,” Kaufman explained. “Nobody talks to Gruden directly, everything goes through Gruden’s agent, as it should be. And Gruden’s agent, operating from a position of tremendous strength, tremendous leverage. . . . Here comes Oakland. Mark Davis, Al’s son. And in the discussions with the agent, it’s basically the agent gets the impression, ‘Whatever you guys want. Let’s make this happen. Whatever you want.’ Well, when he gets back to the Glazers and basically says, ‘We have other options, and [a] concrete option in Oakland, and they’re willing to do this, and do this, and do this.’ And I think it reached a point where the Glazers, talking among themselves, the co-chairmen, said, ‘We can’t go that far. We’re not willing to go that far. A stake in the team. $10 million dollars. Total authority. We can’t do it. Doesn’t make any sense.’ So God bless Jon. Good luck. And at that point they reached the same conclusion that I wrote 10 days ago: If you can’t get Gruden, give Koetter another chance. . . . To even suggest that the Bucs had no interest in Jon Gruden coming back to One Buc Place. How naive can you be?

Cowboys

  • Clarence Hill reports that the Cowboys have informed QBs coach Wade Wilson and secondary coach Joe Baker that they will not return for the 2018 season.
  • Sources tell Hill that special teams coach Rich Bisaccia is expected to join Jon Gruden’s staff with the Raiders once that move is made official.
  • Beyond that, passing game coordinator/LBs coach Matt Eberflus is expected to leave for a promotion, possibly to be a coordinator if Patriots OC Josh McDaniels gets a head coach job.

Giants

  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that Jim Schwartz’s candidacy for the Giants’ head coaching job appears to be losing steam.
  • Florio mentions that it’s possible that the Giants don’t feel compelled to interview Schwartz during the bey week and instead plan to wait until after the Eagles’ season is over. However, he admits that’s “highly unlikely.
  • Florio adds that it’s also possible that GM Dave Gettleman isn’t interested in Schwartz or the team has been scared off after word started leaking that he could be the guy to watch.
  • The Giants have since scheduled an interview with Schwartz that’s expected to take place this weekend. (NFLTR)
