Many Believe Aqib Talib Shot Himself, Could Face Legal Issues

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, the “working hypothesis” from many parties investigating the recent shooting involving Broncos CB Aqib Talib is that he accidentally shot himself.

  • Rapoport adds that there are still a number questions about what really took place that night.

This is obviously reminiscent of the situation involving former Giants WR Plaxico Burress in which he shot himself in the leg back in 2008. Burress was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and a single count of reckless endangerment in the second degree. In total, Burress served served 20 months of his two-year prison sentence.

According to Adam Schefter, Broncos CB Aqib Talib could be facing legal issues in regards to the incident in which he was shot this past weekend.

Schefter mentions that under a new Texas’ law, a person must have a license to carry a gun, and carrying a weapon in public without a license into a place that sells alcohol is considered a Class 3 felony.

Beyond that it’s considered a Class A misdemeanor to possess a weapon while intoxicated in Texas, and punishment carries a year in jail. A Class B misdemeanor to discharge a weapon in public could result in six months in jail.

It’s worth mentioning that there is no official indication Talib was intoxicated on the night of the incident, even though he reportedly told Dallas Police that “everything was a blur” and that he was “too intoxicated” to remember what happened.

Schefter adds that Talib could be charged in two of these three crimes, even if he had a license. As of now, it isn’t known whether Talib had a licensed weapon and was shot at, or whether he shot himself.

An NFL official tells ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL is “actively” looking into circumstances surrounding Broncos CB Aqib Talib, who was shot this past weekend.

A league source who spoke to Schefter said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell “doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t like guns in the hands of intoxicated players, and he especially doesn’t like guns in the hands of intoxicated players who have a history with guns like Talib has.”

The Broncos immediately notified NFL about the shooting after they found out, and the league is now working to determine the facts of the case.

There are still some questions about what really occurred during the incident.

Talib reportedly told the Dallas Police that “everything was a blur” and that he was “too intoxicated” to remember what happened. However, Mike Klis of 9News reported yesterday that Talib told people close to him that he accidentally shot himself.

Klis also points out that the Dallas Police have released a report that says Talib was victim of “aggravated assault” rather than an “accidental shooting.”

The bullet that hit Talib entered through the rear of Talib’s right thigh and exited out his right calf. Although, the expectation is that Talib will miss the final two weeks of offseason practices, but should return either during training camp or the week of their first preseason game.

Talib was released from the hospital on Monday.

Talib, 30, is in the third year of his six-year, $57 million contract that includes $26 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $8.5 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Talib appeared 15 games for the Broncos and recorded 45 tackles, three interceptions with two of them bring returned for touchdowns, and 14 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Talib and the NFL’s investigation as the news is available.
