League sources tell Jason La Canfora that the NFL is poised to announce a new contract extension for commissioner Roger Goodell shortly that will run through the 2024 season.
La Canfora mentions that both the NFL and Goodell’s representatives are taking things slow, considering the complexity of the contract and the amount of money at stake. Even so, the deal was agreed to on Wednesday after a meeting of the NFL’s Compensation Committee, according to La Canfora.
While a report from last week mentioned that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was trying to halt talks of an extension for Goodell, La Canfora says that Jones was not a factor in the process and was never on the committee or authorized to speak for other owners.
Jones is frustrated by the legal battle between the NFL and Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott, but he wasn’t involved with Goodell’s extension and wasn’t working to thwart the process.
Although, Jones has reportedly taken issue with what he perceives to be bloated and overpriced salaries in the league office, which includes several individuals earning $500,000 or more.
This new deal would keep Goodell in place through the 2024 season and extend his run to 19 years as league commissioner.
Goodell has overseen the league during the most prosperous stretch in league history, which has led to record revenues for teams and a team-friendly CBA.Goodell, 58, took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006. His original five-year contract was extended in 2009, and then again in 2012.
