Latest Regarding Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray

Update:

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (per Jon Morosi), Kyler Murray can still enter the 2019 NFL Draft on Monday without violating the terms of his contract.

Susan Slusser reports that Kyler Murray has not made any monetary demands of the A’s and their meeting was about exploring ways to ensure his baseball future.

Slusser says that no dollar figure was presented by Murray or his reps during the meeting.

Jeff Passan reports that MLB would allow the Oakland A’s to carry Kyler Murray on their 40-man roster, but he could still develop in the minor leagues.

According to Passan, the possibility of Oakland guaranteeing money in addition to Murray’s $4.66 million signing bonus was raised during the meeting between the A’s and Murray’s reps.

According to Susan Slusser, the report that Kyler Murray is seeking $15 million from the Oakland A’s is inaccurate and too high.

However, Slusser adds that the A’s and Murray’s representatives are working on trying something creative to accommodate him, which is why the two parties are meeting Sunday. The MLB would have to okay a potential agreement between the A’s and Murray.

Mike Leslie of WFAA in Dallas, citing a source close to the situation, reports that Kyle Murray is looking for $15 million from the Oakland Athletics or plans to enter the 2019 NFL Draft before Monday’s deadline.

According to Leslie, the A’s are “doing everything they can” to keep Murray including sending their top brass to meet with him.

Jason Fitzgerald mentions that at $15 million guaranteed, it would be the equivalent of being selected with the No. 14 overall pick.

Chris Mortensen reports that NFL GMs expect Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray to declare for the NFL draft before Monday’s deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft.

Murray will then have 72 hours to change his mind.

Mortensen notes that Murray would make more than the $4.66 million he got from the Oakland Athletics if he ends up being a first-round pick.

Meanwhile, Bob Nightengale reports that the Oakland Athletics have a contingent, led by president Billy Beane, meeting Sunday with Murray in hopes of persuading him to forego the NFL and play baseball for them.

This fits with a report from The San Francisco Chronicle who mentioned that the A’s expect Murray to declare for the NFL draft on Sunday.

Murray has an invite to participate in the A’s spring training camp, but the NFL scouting combine is slated for February 26 and he’d obviously need to attend if he’s going to cement his status as a potential top-50 pick.

A source tells the Chronicle that Murray is leaning toward football.

In the event Murray pursues an NFL career, he would have to return his signing bonus and the A’s would not receive a compensation pick in 2019.

During this three-year college career at Texans A&M and Oklahoma, Murray completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 5,098 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,369 and 12 touchdowns over the course of 28 games.

We’ll have more regarding Murray as the news is available.
