NFL News: Bears Give Lovie Smith Two More Years

How things can change in the NFL. To start the 2010 season it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Lovie Smith and the Chicago Bears would be parting ways at some point during the season but Smith somehow managed to get a team that wasn’t picked by many to do anything into the NFC Championship game.

Well, the Bears organization rewarded Smith with a two-year extension today which will also increase his salary to $5.5 million. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz will also remain with the team beyond the 2011 season. Chicago refused to allow the Tennessee Titans to speak with offensive line coach Mike Tice so the Bears will keep one of their best assets in place the a few more years.

Getting only two years added on to his current deal is exactly a huge endorsement from the team but considering the up’s and down’s that Chicago has experienced while under the Lovie’s direction, I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving him anymore than that either.
