NFL Notes: 2018 NFL Draft, Jaylon Smith, Buccaneers, & Dolphins

2018 NFL Draft

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have spoken to the NFL about possibly hosting the 2018 NFL Draft at AT&T Stadium.

“Multiple cities and teams across the country have expressed interest in hosting what has become one of the most-anticipated events of the year,” said a league spokesperson. “Dallas is among the sites that would be under consideration to host a future Draft. … We do not have a timeline on making a decision.”

Other cities that have expressed interest in hosting the draft include Chicago, Canton, Denver, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Jaylon Smith

  • According to Joel Corry, the Cowboys won’t be able to place second-round LB Jaylon Smith on the injured reserve list, considering that his injury happened prior to him being in the NFL.
  • Instead, the Cowboys would have to place him on the non-football injury list.
  • Should Smith sit out the entire 2016 season, Corry mentions that he would be a restricted free agent in 2020 instead of an unrestricted free agent.

Buccaneers

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht told Scott Reynolds of PewterReport.com that they had a first-round grade on K Roberto Aguayo, which explains why they traded back into the end of round two to get him.

“Not a lot of people will ever admit that a kicker is worth a first-round pick,” Licht said. “I’m going to be jumping for joy when a few of the people in your business (the media) realize that some are.”

  • Licht added that they’ve drafted seven players with first-round grades in the past two years, including: QB Jameis Winston, LT Donovan Smith, G Ali Marpet, LB Kwon Alexander, CB Vernon Hargreaves III, DE Noah Spence and Aguayo.

Dolphins

  • Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are “puzzled, borderline angry” about the recent report from Jason Cole that first-round pick Laremy Tunsil has a “pre-arthritic” ankle condition.
  • Sources have told Salguero that Miami was also a bit frustrated that Tunsil was being portrayed as a player with multiple issues when there really aren’t concerns about his ankle.
