NFL Notes: 49ers, Bengals, Jaguars, Vikings

49ers

49ers  GM John Lynch explained that they’re consistently having internal discussions about potential extensions for players. However, they would like to see how some of their extension candidates play this year.

“I would say that we’re always having internal discussions, Kyle (Shanahan) and myself and our staffs,” Lynch said, via Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “And, we really try to be forward thinking looking out, not just this year but three to five years and saying, ‘OK, let’s look at the construct of our roster.’ But, our priority was let’s provide competition at each and every position. And so, that’s why we were so active this year to go out and to be able to really judge this and judge those guys in particular. There’s going to be a little more urgency with some of them, but we’re going to let this play out a little bit and see how they fit with what we want to do. We have some ideas, but there’s nothing like going and actually doing it. So, we’re excited for that, as are those players.

One extension candidate for the 49ers is S Eric Reid, who admitted that his contract status is on his mind.

“I definitely think about it,” Reid said. “It’s obviously in my brain, but I’m just going to keep playing football. Whatever happens, happens. I would love to be here for longer but it’s a business and I understand that so it is what it is.

Bengals

  • Bengals S George Iloka was carted off after suffering a non-contact right knee injury during Sunday’s practice.
  • However, Adam Caplan reports that Iloka’s ACL and MCL appear to be intact, but they’re still awaiting MRI results.

Jaguars

  • On Monday, Jaguars LT Branden Albert surprisingly announced that he’s retiring from the NFL, despite being traded to Jacksonville earlier this offseason.
  • Ian Rapoport mentions that if Albert does, in fact, follow through on retirement, he would owe the Jaguars $3.4 million of his signing bonus — $1.7 million in 2017 and $1.7M in 2018.

Vikings

Vikings RB Latavius Murray (ankle, active/PUP) said Monday that there’s still no timetable for him to return, but he does expect to be ready for the start of the season.

Although, Vikings HC Mike Zimmer stressed that they really need to see him on the practice field.

“He is a smart guy, but he needs to get out there,” Zimmer said, via ESPN.com.

Murray explained that even though he’s had a similar injury, you can’t treat the rehab process the same.

“You can’t treat any injury the same,” Murray said. “Even if it’s the same surgery, you can’t treat the recovery process the same way. Everyone is different and so I’m just trusting the process.”

At the end of the day, football is football. For me, it’s just making sure physically I’m OK. But the mental part of it, it’s a game I’ve been playing all my life,” Murray added.
