NFL Notes: 49ers, Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Lions

49ers

49ers GM John Lynch mentioned on ESPN’s “NFL Insiders” that they could still approach a team regarding a trade for a quarterback.

“We’re not closing the door on any options,” Lynch said, per Adam Schefter. “We have the number 2 pick and that’s a valuable asset. Fortunately for Kyle (Shanahan) and I, we weren’t part of that 2-14 season. And so now we get to walk in and the good side of that is we have the number 2 pick, and I think that opens a lot of doors for people to try to talk to us about that pick, as well. Or we can sit back and get a really talented player right there, so we’re excited about that.

Broncos

Chargers

Chargers GM Tom Telesco told reporters at the Combine that they’re interested in working on a long-term deal for franchise OLB Melvin Ingram.

“It was important to get him back with us,” Telesco said, via ESPN.com. “We put the franchise tag on him right now, and we will continue to talk with them. We still have time, until July 15, to try and work on a long-term deal.

Telesco also explained that maintaining their pass-rush long-term will be key for them.

For the type of player he is and the position he plays, he’s very important for us,” Telesco said. “Pass rush wins in this league. We have Joey Bosa on one side, so if we don’t have Melvin Ingram, we have a pretty big hole. We like what we’ve seen from Melvin, and he still has room to get better, too.

“One thing about Melvin and what we really like about him is every year during the offseason he worked on a specific part of his game, and each year you came back and saw that in the offseason. And I think we’ll see that moving forward as well.”

Chiefs

  • Jason La Canfora spoke with Chiefs GM John Dorsey, who was “unequivocal” that Alex Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback in 2017.
  • In regards to free agent DT Dontari Poe, Dorsey said “I’d like to have him back” and added that the line of communication “is open.” (BJ Kissel)
