NFL Notes: Barry Cofield, Browns, Dolphins, Rams, & Titans

Barry Cofield

  • Free agent DT Barry Cofield, who is recovering from groin and abdomen surgeries, will be ready to go in four to six weeks. (Ian Rapoport)

Browns

  • Head coach Mike Pettine said that QB Josh McCown is likely the opening day starter, but he would not guarantee it. (Mary Kay Cabot)
  • Pettine also discussed Terrelle Pryor‘s move to receiver saying: “from an athletically-gifted skillset, I think he can do it.” (Mary Kay Cabot)
  • Pettine added that he “won’t eliminate Pryor as a QB down the road but I want him to focus 1,000 percent on receiver.” (Mary Kay Cabot)

Dolphins

Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez discussed on the Joe Rose Show whether or not it’s a playoff-or-bust season for Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin.

It’s a great question, but it’s really one that doesn’t have an answer and I’ll explain why. Let’s say the Dolphins come out like gangbusters, right. They’re 9-2 to start the year. And then they lose their final five games, then they go in the playoffs and they lose. Well, that’s a different 9-7 than the team that’s 4-5 at midseason, catches fire, and then makes a run.

Marvez added: “The only thing that really is tangible as far as Joe Philbin this year is the playoffs because the Dolphins haven’t been in so darn long. That’s all you can say. You can’t say 10 wins is the goal and then if the Dolphins end up not making the playoffs at 10 wins, it’s tough.

Rams

  • Rams QB’s Austin Davis and Case Keenum will be competing for the backup QB position behind starter Nick Foles. (Nick Wagoner)
  • Rookie QB Sean Mannion will be given time to develop and adjust to the speed of the NFL as the third-string quarterback rather than compete for the backup position. (Nick Wagoner)

 Titans

  • NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed that the incident involving Titans WR Justin Hunter on July 3rd is “under review” by the league. (Terry McCormick)
