NFL Notes: Bears, Browns, Cardinals, Rams

Bears

After an impressive showing in the preseason opener, there’s been a lot of buzz about Bears rookie QB Mitch Trubisky. However, he says he isn’t paying any attention to the buzz.

I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Trubisky said, via Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. “I don’t pay attention to it.”

“A couple more people texted me after the game — family congratulating me,” Trubisky said. “I think it’s just a small step in the right direction. I’ve still got a lot of work to do. I was pleased with how I played, but plenty more mistakes are going on during practice for me that I need to work on and continue to improve in my game and make sure when I go out there that I’m doing my job to help other people do their job.

“I think it just showed me that I’m making progress, that I could go out there and lead and do my job like I wanted to show. But it was just a small sample. It was the first game, and you’ve just got to continue to be consistent in reproducing it. That’s why we’re out here working and practicing.”

Browns

  • NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday that reinstating suspended WR Josh Gordon is “not under active consideration” right now. (Mary Kay Cabot)
  • Goodell did, however, add: “[A]t least it hasn’t made it to my desk yet.

Cardinals

Cardinals DB Tyrann Mathieu admitted that he didn’t like playing free safety in the past, but he’s warmed up to the position.

“I didn’t really like playing free safety,” Mathieu said, via Josh Weinfuss. “I didn’t like being in the middle of the field. I feel like I came into camp and I’m really playing free safety like a free safety, so I’m getting better each and every day.”

“I’ve challenged myself to really play the position and understand the position, and I feel like I’m getting better doing it,” Mathieu added.

Rams

Rams GM Les Snead mentioned that they expect WR Tavon Austin to be used similar to how they’ve used him in the past.

“We haven’t figured out how much he evolves as a receiver in this offense because he hasn’t had a chance to play,” Snead told Pro Football Talk. “Plan to see him used very similarly to how he’s been used in the past. By that I mean, he’s scored as a receiver, he’s scored as a running back, he’s scored as a returner. That’s why we like him. He threatens the opposing team in many different ways. We’ve just got to get him healthy.
