NFL Notes: Bears, Browns, Cowboys, Vikings

Bears

  • The injury settlement the Bears gave OLB Lamarr Houston was worth $700,000, which is two weeks pay from his prior $5.95 million base salary for 2017. (Brad Biggs)

Browns

Browns HC Hue Jackson declared QB Kevin Hogan as the team’s primary backup over Cody Kessler for Week 1 given that Hogan is “more in line” with their gameplan this week.

I just think when I look at what we are trying to accomplish this week, I have watched the guy move the team, do some good things,” Jackson said, via Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com. “Not that Cody didn’t. Cody has done some good things, too. I just think this week I felt like Kevin is more in line with where we are and what we are trying to accomplish this week.

Cowboys

  • According to Todd Archer, Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith is “likely” to start Sunday’s season opener against the Giants.

Vikings

Former Vikings LB Chad Greenway heard from some of his old teammates that veteran G Alex Boone was cut last week because he wasn’t in as good of shape as the team would have liked.

“I had heard through some players that I know that are out there every day that said he came back not the Alex Boone of old, a little bit out of shape, and wasn’t really prepared for the season, and I thought that was pretty interesting,” Greenway said on KFAN, via Chris Tomasson of the Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

“It really did surprise me,” Greenway added. “I like Boone. I played with him last year. I thought he brought a really good mentality to the offensive line. I am surprised they ate that much guaranteed money, but that tells me that something was clearly off with his game, with his style of play, that they said, ‘We have to just eat this and move on and go to a younger player and see how that works.’”
