NFL Notes: Bengals, Jaguars, Jets, Patriots

Bengals

Bengals HC Marvin Lewis said he does not have a time frame for his career and does not think a contract extension is “critical” for him at this point in time.

I don‘t have a time frame,” Lewis said, via Geoff Hobson of the Bengals’ official site. “I don’t have a set (time). I’m going to stop when I stop.”

Regarding an extension, Lewis said it is not an urgent matter for him right now.

I don’t think it’s critical or crucial,” Lewis said of an extension. “If things work out we would look to do that.”

Jaguars

  • Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union, citing a league source, says TE Julius Thomas did not work out for the Jaguars for multiple reasons, including a lack of downfield catches, the emergence of young receivers on the roster, a lack of yards after the catch, and “non-existent” blocking ability.

Jets

  • Rich Cimini of ESPN mentions that Jets CB Darrelle Revis recent interactions on social media indicate he’s willing to take a pay cut based to be back with the Jets.
  • According to Cimini, Revis indicated that he “doesn’t deserve” to be paid like a top-10 cornerback.
  • Cimini insists that the Jets have leverage in negotiations with Revis, due to his declining ability and legal issues from a recent arrest. Cimini could see Revis playing on a contract in the $6 million to $8.5 million range for 2017.
  • As for Jets QB Geno Smith, Cimini does not think the team has totally given up on him and there’s still a chance he could return to New York for next season. Even so, Cimini believes it would still be best for the Jets and Smith to go their separate ways.

Patriots

  • Mike Reiss of ESPN mentions that while it’s possible the Patriots could try to re-sign WR Michael Floyd, “it isn’t the slam dunk that [he] previously envisioned.” Instead, Reiss doesn’t see the Patriots extending themselves financially to retain Floyd
  • Reiss names four low-to-moderate priced free agents that could be intriguing options for the Patriots, including Rams RB Benny Cunningham, Packers DE Datone Jones, Steelers LB Jarvis Jones, and Bills WR Robert Woods.
