NFL Notes: Bills, Browns, Chargers, Saints

Bills

Jaguars HC Doug Marrone addressed some reports that he was upset that the Bills traded up to get WR Sammy Watkins during the 2014 draft.

According to Marrone, he thinks highly of Watkins and was happy to have him, but he just concerned about the cost to move up and get him.

“It wasn’t the player for me. I love Sammy. We wanted Sammy as much as anybody. We were excited about that when the pick came through,” Marrone said, per Alden Gonzalez. “What’s gone on is, I was a little concerned about just giving up too much, not knowing what our quarterback situation was. That was the only thing that I voiced. After that, s— I was happy as hell to get Sammy, and you go on. Not many times like that are you able to get a special player like Sammy, and that’s how I think of Sammy Watkins. He’s a special player.”

Browns

Browns rookie QB DeShone Kizer made it clear that he plans to be back under center for the team at some point in the near future after Hue Jackson made the decision to go with Kevin Hogan in Week 6.

“I don’t play this game to sit on the bench, so now it’s about accepting this as a challenge and doing whatever I can to get back out there and once again be the best quarterback and the best version of myself I can be when I do get back out there,” Kizer said Wednesday, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Nothing makes this easier. I’m a competitor. I want to be out there playing. When I came out here and got drafted here, my ultimate goal was to be the starting quarterback for every opportunity that I could and I came a little short of that this week and I’m going to do whatever I can to get right back on the path that I was on.

Chargers

  • Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said of first-round WR Mike Williams: “He’s very close. We’ll see at the end of the week where he’s at. He’s been in the playbook the whole time.

Saints

  • Saints HC Sean Payton said that RT Zach Strief, who was recently placed on injured reserve with a knee injury, is a candidate to return at some point later on in the season. (Herbie Teope)
  • Howard Balzer reports that the Saints worked out six free agents on Tuesday including LB Richie Brown, LB Reshard Cliett, LB Shayne Skov (signed to practice squad), DT Woodrow Hamilton (signed to practice squad), DT Rickey Hatley, and DT Jeremy Liggins.
