NFL Notes: Bills, Browns, Cowboys & Jaguars

Bills

  • Ian Rapoport reports that that the Bills’ quarterback situation is worth watching in the coming months.
  • According to Rapoport, the Bills do not want to sign starting QB Tyrod Taylor to an extension right now.
  • They’re also not expected to pick up former first-round pick EJ Manuel‘s fifth-year option.
  • This, of course, means that rookie QB Cardale Jones should get a real shot at the job at some point.

Browns

Browns executive V.P. of football operations Sashi Brown said “[he’d] beg to differ” with the notion that rookie QB Cody Kessler won’t compete with Robert Griffin III for the starting quarterback job.

“I do think Cody is a guy that I would not want to sleep on at all if I wanted to be the starting quarterback of the Browns,” Brown said, per Mary Kay Cabot. “...[Kessler is] going to come in serious ready to work. Robert has four years of NFL experience, is tremendously athletic and serious about becoming a starting quarterback in this league. There’s no reason he can’t, but this is going to be a competition.

“We truly believe in competition here,” Brown added. “We’re realistic about where our roster is at that slot and we want to find a long-term answer. It’s as critical for everything we’re going to do here. We’ll give them an opportunity to compete and the best quarterback is going to start for us period. We’ll roll the ball out and see who’s the best at throwing it.”

Cowboys

  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed some regret on Saturday for not getting a trade agreement in place to move up for QB Paxton Lynch, saying: “I probably should have overpaid.” (Drew Davison)

Jaguars

  • Jaguars GM David Caldwell said he plans to speak with LT Luke Joeckel on Monday about whether they’ll be picking up his fifth-year option. (Ryan O’Halloran)
