NFL Notes: Von Miller, Chargers, & Saints

Von Miller

• Pro Football Talk writes that the rookie wage scale included in the most recent CBA agreement gives Broncos LB Von Miller even more reason to be upset with his contract situation.
• As noted by Florio, Miller earned $30.754 million over the course of five years as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 year while 2010 No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh signed signed a five-year deal worth more than $60 million a year earlier. All in all, the Broncos saved a significant amount of money and got Miller for more years at a more reasonable salary.
• Miller will attend the team’s right ceremony Sunday night despite acrimony over his contract negotiations, according to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold.

Chargers

• With Eric Weddle gone, Chargers LB Manti Te’o is being called upon to fill the void as the emotional leader of the defense, according to Eric D. Williams.
• Another emerging leader is free agent acquisition DT Brandon Mebane, who brings swagger and confidence to San Diego, according to Williams. Mebane won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks two seasons ago, and he is bringing that winning mindset to the Chargers defense.
• Williams writes that the Chargers would like to build a new stadium and convention center expansion in San Diego, which is why the team’s citizens stadium initiative is eligible for the November ballot.
• Williams adds that the Chargers would rather be the lone tenant in San Diego than share a facility with the Rams in Los Angeles, which is why they are bothering with the vote.

Saints

Saints DC Dennis Allen stressed that they plan to be “multiple” in terms of their defense in 2016, instead of his just focusing on being a 4-3 or 3-4 base defense.

“I don’t put a lot of stock in, ‘Are you going to be 4-3, 3-4?’ ” Allen said, via Nick Underhill of The Advocate. “We’re going to be multiple. We’re going to have some 4-3 defenses. We’re going to have some 3-4 defenses. What we do best, that’s what we’re going to major in.”

Allen added that while having multiple looks in terms of their defense will help to confuse opposing offenses, it’s still important to earn that it’s simple for their players to execute.

“That’s the key. The key is to be multiple — at least create multiple looks for the offense — but be simple for us,” Allen said. “That’s what we try to do. We try to tie things in as much as we can and keep as many things the same, but give a lot of different looks to the offense.”
