NFL Notes: Broncos, Colts, Jets

Broncos

Broncos OLB Von Miller says he’s hoping to be the kind of mentor DeMarcus Ware was for him earlier in his career when it comes to first-round pick Bradley Chubb.

DeMarcus, I always say, he was one of those guys who taught me how to approach things,” Miller said. “But mainly he always answered everything I asked him and a lot of people say you should ask any time and then you can’t really make that work. But DeMarcus, he really answered me every time and he was real. I want to do that.

“I just want to be the best Von I can be,” Miller added. “That’s what DeMarcus really showed me. It doesn’t stop as long as you’re in this league, you have to grind — work — to get better or you won’t be great. You won’t even be good. So embrace the work, love it, because that work is the thing. That’s my message.

Miller mentioned that he even sees some of himself in Chubb.

“He’s great,” Miller said. “He reminds me of myself. He texts me late at night. Texts me at 3 o’clock in the morning. I’m up [laughing]. I’m all for it. It’s good, it’s some of the same stuff I saw — it’s some of the same stuff that I was doing with DeMarcus.”

Colts

Colts GM Chris Ballard admitted that this is going to be a “big year” for third-year S T.J. Green.

“This is a big year for the kid and he knows it,” Ballard said, via 1070theFan.com. “I think we often forget, T.J. was 20 years old when he came into the league. He was a young player and he’s still young, 22 years old now. It will be interesting to see if we can get him into just one position, let him compete, let him play fast.

Green is well aware of his situation and the expectations for him moving forward.

There ain’t no time to waste,” Green says. “This is a business league. You have to perform.

“I want to be the guy. It’s Year Three for me. I’m focused. I have a family to take care of and a daughter to take care of. I’m just here to work.

Jets

After missing the entire 2017 season due to a back injury that led to him being placed on injured reserve, Jets OLB Lorenzo Mauldin says he’s looking forward to showing the coaching staff he’s back and can be a factor at edge rusher this season.

“I look forward to showing the coaches that I still got my groove,” Mauldin said, via the New York Daily News. “Last year, I was on my track and then the injury kind of got me. The only thing stopping me now is me. I’m going to go out there and show the coaches what I got.

“All I can do is show them that I can still pass rush. They say a lot of players aren’t the same when they come off the injury. They lose a step. But I feel like I gained a step… because what was hindering me before is now gone.”
