NFL Notes: Browns, Colts, Giants, Jets

Browns

Browns HC Hue Jackson told reporters after Monday night’s game that he would like to name the team’s starting quarterback by Wednesday.

“I will watch the tape,” Jackson said, per Pro Football Talk. “There were some things that I felt on the sidelines just being out there watching the game, calling the plays and watching how things happen. Like I told you guys, I hope by Wednesday of this upcoming week we will have a decision of where we are headed, and I think that is what we have to do. . . .

“I kind of want to put this thing to bed by Wednesday. I kind of want to say, ‘Here is where we are going’ because I think this upcoming game, we will play a little longer with the first group because I think it is important to do so and have as many guys that are going to play in the opener playing because this is the dress rehearsal game. I would like to put this thing to bed and just move forward in that direction, and whatever decision we make, we make. We want to make the best one for the Browns.”

Colts

  • Mike Chappell was told by someone who’s “generally plugged in” that Colts QB Andrew Luck was throwing 30-yard finesse passes last week.
  • Chappell admits he doesn’t know if it’s true, but he’s doubting Luck will be available for Week 1 and may not be ready to play until Week 3.

Giants

  • Giants OT Michael Bowie turned himself into police on Monday after he was recently charged with domestic assault, according to James Kratch.
  • Kratch later added that jail records show Bowie has been released after posting bond.

Jets

Jets HC Todd Bowles said he expects to announce the opening-day starting quarterback next Monday.

“I have my own thoughts, but it’s a coaches’ decision,” Bowles said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. “We’ll discuss it after the game and we’ll come up with our starter.”

While Bowles wants to give it another week, Rich Cimini says it would be a “major upset” if they didn’t give the job to Josh McCown over Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.
