NFL Notes: Browns, Dolphins, Ryan Tannehill, Giants

Browns

  • Browns HC Hue Jackson told reporters after today’s game that veteran QB Josh McCown will undergo X-rays Monday to assess his broken collarbone and where he’s at in his recovery. (Mary Kay Cabot)

Dolphins

Dolphins HC Adam Gase made it clear that QB Ryan Tannehill will remain the team’s starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, despite his struggles.

“No. He’s not coming out,” Gase said, via the Miami Herald. “You can ask me 100 times, he’s going to be in there the rest of the season.

Tannehill was appreciative Gase’s support.

“I know coach has confidence in me — I have confidence in myself — and I think the guys on offense have confidence in me,” Tannehill said. “We’re going to go out and play. I’m going to push myself in practice, do everything I can do to get better and expect to play better.”

  • Jason Fitzgerald points out that the cap cost to releasing Tannehill in 2017 would come out to $10.4 million against their cap. Tannehill has $3.5 million of this salary guaranteed next year.
  • If Miami were to find a trade partner for Tannehill, they would take on $6.9 million in dead money next year, according to Fitzgerald. However, the real issue with this idea is that another team would have to agree to take on Tannehill’s $18 million in salary, which seems unlikely based on his play up to this point.

Giants

  • Mike Florio of Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that the Giants lack the locker-room leadership to control star WR Odell Beckham Jr. and force him to comply with the team expectations and ultimately prevent his actions from being a distraction.
  • Florio adds that the team’s lack of success drafting players in the first round outside of Beckham doesn’t help either, as he’s clearly the team’s centerpiece.
