NFL Notes: Buccaneers, Eagles, Giants

Buccaneers

Rick Stroud takes a look at a number of reasons why suspended RB Doug Martin remains on the Buccaneers’ roster.

  • The first of which is that the Bucs didn’t come away from the draft with an immediate replacement to Martin. Tampa Bay used a fifth-round pick on Jeremy McNichols, whom Stroud expects to see time as a third-down option.
  • Stroud points out that the Buccaneers can afford to keep Martin and go with Jacquizz Rodgers, Charles Sims, Peyton Barber and McNichols to open the season.
  • Another consideration is that Martin should be motivated to put together a solid 2017 season, considering that he’ll be coming off of a suspension and is owed $5.76 million this year.

Eagles

Eagles second-round CB Sidney Jones said he feels good but they still have no plans to rush him back to the field after he suffered an Achilles tear during his Pro Day.

“I’m feeling good,” Jones said, via Philly.com. “Everything looks good to [the medical staff]. We’re just going to follow the protocol and schedule. No rush to get me back. We’re just going to go whenever I’m ready and whenever anyone else feels ready.

“Nobody wants to rush me back and see a re-injury occur from this. That will be a bad situation if that happens. We’re going to stick to the safe side and take it slowly.

Giants

Jordan Raanan of ESPN mentions that third-round QB Davis Webb met HC Ben McAdoo and OC Mike Sullivan for the first time last Thursday for the start of minicamp.

“First impression is he’s tall,” Sullivan said of Webb. “I had to look up and say hello. … Good firm handshake, look you right in the eye. Heck of guy. All the reports that I read say that he’s very bright, a gym rat. One of those guys that can’t watch enough film. Came across that way, as someone that is very bright and going to be a hard worker. I was generally pleased with the first impression when I first met him [Thursday] night.”

Raanan points out that this isn’t typically how a team gets to know a high draft pick. New York didn’t even bring Webb in for a pre-draft visit or a workout and he was the only one of the first eight quarterbacks that didn’t meet with his new team before the draft.
