NFL Notes: Chargers, Giants, Lions

Chargers

The Chargers used their first-round pick on Clemson WR Mike Williams last month, which leaves them really deep at the position as offseason workouts are about to get under way.

One player who will now need an impressive camp is Geremy Davis, as he’ll be competing for playing with Willians, Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin and Dontrelle Inman.

“As a wide receiver you’ve got to be greedy and want the ball,” Davis said, via Chargers.com. “Obviously you want to show the talent that you have. That you can make plays and catch the ball as well. So I can only control what I can control, and that is when the ball is thrown my way, make a play and show what I can do. If they don’t throw it, at least show that I am getting open. When someone else catches it, do my part to help make it an even bigger play.

It’s worth mentioning that Inman recently underwent a surgical procedure, which could open the door for Davis to get more work over the next month or so.

Giants

Giants G Justin Pugh mentioned that he’s “sitting in the driver’s seat” right now in regards to his contract situation.

I’m sitting in the driver’s seat,’’ Pugh said, via Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. “…I’ve played good football. I know how important this year is for me. I think this is the best Giants team I’ve been on, so I think the sky’s the limit for the team and myself.’’

Pugh made it clear that he’s taken note of the contracts handed out to free agent guards in recent years.

“Trust me, I noticed,’’ Pugh said. “Some of the guards are really good players who have not made Pro Bowls, guys that have missed significant time and have gotten paid a lot of money. I know where I sit in that hierarchy. I also know the Giants need to do right by me, too.

“I’ve gone out there and done everything they’ve ever asked me to do. So I know my worth. I’m going to go out there and play my best season of football and hopefully the Giants say, ‘Let’s pay him what he deserves.’”

Lions

Former Lions WR Calvin Johnson offered an interesting response when asked about the possibility of the team retiring his jersey at some point.

“I don’t even like to talk Lions too much just because the way our relationship ended,” Johnson said, via the Detroit Free Press. “If they see me around here, we’ll see. But hey, I don’t know.

Johnson did, however, say that he hold no ill will toward his former team, but added that he doesn’t think he was treated the way he should have been upon retiring from the NFL.

I don’t feel any kind of way, but I just didn’t feel like I was treated the way I should have been treated on the way out,” Johnson said. “That’s all. I mean, it’s all good. I’m not tripping. I don’t feel any kind of way, just hey, that’s what they did. Hey, it is what is.”

Dave Birkett points out that Johnson paid one-tenth ($320,000) of his $3.2 million signing bonus that he received from the Lions back in 2012.
