NFL Notes: Chiefs, Colts, Jets, & Redskins

Chiefs

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said he hopes to re-sign NT Dontari Poe and S Eric Berry to extensions this offseason.

I’ll just say generically, with all the guys we drafted, we want them all back,” Hunt said, via Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “That’s got to be balanced, at some point, with the cap. It’s truly a dynamic process as we go through it, but I certainly hope Dontari is back with us this year.”

Hunt went on to say that he “absolutely” wants Berry to return for next season given that he has emerged as a leader for the Chiefs.

Absolutely — I can’t speak highly enough about Eric,” said Hunt. “The person he is, the football player he is, the leader. He’s a source of inspiration. His role for the team in 2016, what he meant to the team and the leadership he provided, we certainly want Eric back.”

Colts

  • Mike Wells of ESPN expects age to be a factor for recently hired Colts GM Chris Ballard when re-signing impending free agents.
  • Wells can see the Colts extending TE Jack Doyle since he is only 26-years old and was arguably the team’s best tight end last season.
  • As for other extension candidates, Wells mentions CB Darius Butler as a player that could be re-signed and asked to convert to the safety position.
  • According to Wells, the Colts’ staff are questioning whether second-round S T.J. Green is ready to be an every-down starter, making Butler an interesting candidate to be signed and switch positions to ease Greens’ workload.

Jets

  • Connor Hughes of NJ Advance Media does not view Cowboys QB Tony Romo as a realistic option for the Jets, should he be released this offseason. Hughes can only see Romo playing for a contending team or reworking his contract to stay in Dallas.
  • Hughes says the Jets “have their eyes” on impending free agent QB Mike Glennon, making him the team’s “most likely scenario” in signing a quarterback.
  • Hughes also mentions Bills QB Tyrod Taylor or Bears QB Brian Hoyer as other options for the Jets. As for internal choices, he does not think Bryce Petty will earn the starting role in 2017.
  • Hughes writes that the Jets philosophy with the No. 6 overall pick will be to choose the best player available and could see the team select any of the following positions, including offensive tackle, receiver, outside linebacker, inside linebacker, cornerback, quarterback or safety.

Redskins

Redskins president Bruce Allen said there is “optimism” towards re-signing QB Kirk Cousins and that negotiations are not as “complicated” as people are making it out to be.

You start out with optimism, of course,” Allen said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “And I don’t think it’s as complicated as everyone wants to make it. And we’ll get together with his agent, and I’m sure we’ll come to an agreement.”

Allen went on to say that Cousins will continue to be the team’s quarterback going forward.

[Kirk’s] going to be our quarterback,” Allen said. “We’ve said it. We obviously like what we’ve done. We think we’re going to get better, that’s the key. And as we talked with [Kirk] earlier today, Super Bowls are real fun when you bring all your roommates with you. That’s when it’s special, and that’s our goal.”
