NFL Notes: Chip Kelly, 49ers, Giants, Packers, & Texans

Chip Kelly

Pete Thamel of SI.com writes Eagles HC Chip Kelly will likely come up as a speculative option for the USC Trojans if they continue to struggle.

Thamel notes that USC has “strong interest” in Kelly at the time when they hired Steve Sarkisian.

According to Albert Breer, Kelly “loves” the NFL, but has long been said to have eyes for the USC job.

However, there’s still plenty of time Sarkisian to get things turned around at USC and put to rest speculation about them potentially pursuing NFL coaches like Kelly.

49ers

49ers OC Geep Chryst told reporters that they are making some tweaks to their offense this week ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Giants.

We made some major changes — I shouldn’t say major — we’ve made some changes, some adjustments, that we feel good about going into this game,” Chryst said, via CSN Bay Area.

Giants

  • Giants TE Daniel Fells (foot, I.R.) has a fifth surgery scheduled for this weekend for the MRSA injection in his foot. (Jordan Raanan)
  • Fells is still hospitalized, and his situation remains serious, given MRSA is difficult to treat due to it resists common antibiotics and having a tendency to spread. (Jordan Raanan)

Packers

  • After hearing Packers HC Mike McCarthy discuss some of the team’s injuries, Tom Silverstein mentions that it sounds like RT Bryan Bulaga will be back for the Week 5 game against the Rams.
  • However, Silverstein adds that is doesn’t sound good for S Morgan Burnett and WR Davante Adams.

Texans

Following Thursday night’s game, Texans HC Bill O’Brien wouldn’t say if they were going to keep Brian Hoyer in place as their starting quarterback or go with Ryan Mallett.

“Brian I thought did a good job tonight, but we’ll talk about it. I haven’t even talked to the staff yet about it. We’ll sit down and review the film. I thought Brian did a good job though. He went in there, it wasn’t the easiest of circumstances – other than the last play there where he kind of launched it up there. He probably wants to have that one back, but I thought he did a good job. We’ll review it tomorrow and see where we are at that position,” O’Brien said.
