NFL Notes: Colin Kaepernick, Josh McCown, Bears, Bengals

Colin Kaepernick

49ers GM John Lynch said he and HC Kyle Shanahan will meet with QB Colin Kaepernick later this month to discuss his future with the team.

The first order of business is Kyle and I both really attacking [the roster] and seeing what we have here and we’ll do that with his situation,” Lynch said, via Zac Jackson of ProFootballTalk. “We’ll sit down with him and if we see fit that he’s a part of it, we’ll commit to that. If not, we’ll figure things out.”

Lynch went on to say that Kaepernick recently “reached out” to him and that the team would meet with him after sorting out their personnel plans.

Additionally, Shanahan admitted that he still needs to watch film on Kaepernick to evaluate him.

Colin, just like any other player, is someone I’m going to be watching a lot of tape on over these next few weeks,” Shanahan said. “Before we can look into anything — free agency, draft, anything — you have to know what the players on your team are. That doesn’t happen from just turning on a game. That happens from watching a lot of stuff. It takes a lot of time. It is a process. I am a little bit behind right now, but I have the time to do it and I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to get started on it.

It is worth mentioning that Kaepernick is reportedly still undecided about opting out of his contract. (NFLTR)

Josh McCown

Former Browns QB Josh McCown said it would be intriguing to take a coaching job with Cleveland, but would like to continue his playing career before doing so.

He’s someone I have a ton of respect for and enjoyed playing for,” McCown said, via Tony Grossi of ESPN. “So, certainly it would be intriguing. If it was time for me to get into coaching, it would be a smooth transition [alongside Jackson]. But for me and my family right now, that’s not where I’m at.”

However, McCown said that he feels coaching could eventually be in his future.

Can that change? Might that change? At some point, it will – whether it’s three months from now or three years from now. I feel that’s part of my future, but right now I’m eager to continue playing,” said McCown.

Bears

  • Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune writes that the Bears should consider drafting LSU S Jamal Adams or Ohio State S Malik Hooker with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft if the team evaluates them as Pro Bowl-caliber players.
  • Biggs expects Chicago to make significant upgrades to their defensive backfield and believes they will prioritize the cornerback position higher than safety, but will still address the safety position at some point.
  • Biggs believes the Bears would have to consider a trading up in the draft to select a quarterback if they do not select one at No. 3 overall. This is due to the Browns, 49ers, Jets, Texans, Cardinals, and possibly the Bills all having needs at quarterback.

Bengals

  • Bengals S George Iloka underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder but is expected to be recovered in time for spring practice. (Jim Owcarzski)
