NFL Notes: Colin Kaepernick, Seahawks, Collusion Case

Here’s the latest regarding the news that the Seahawks had a tryout scheduled free agent QB Colin Kaepernick before postponing the meeting due to concerns about him kneeling during the national anthem (NFLTR).

  • Charles Robinson reports that the Seahawks scheduled the visit for Monday, but backed out after Kaepernick wouldn’t stipulate to ending his kneeling during the anthem.
  • Robinson adds that the Seahawks left the door open to starting over with Kaepernick, but he strongly disagrees with Ian Rapoport’s report that kneeling wasn’t an issue here.
  • Jason La Canfora confirms that the two parties had the meeting scheduled for a few weeks, but things changed on Sunday.
  • According to La Canfora, a Seahawks’ executive asked Kaepernick if he still planned on any pregame protests and if he did, the trip probably was not worth taking.
  • Kaepernick and his reps said he was focused on the workout and playing only, but wouldn’t agree to any conditions about not kneeling during the anthem and the tryout was then postponed, per La Canfora.
  • La Canfora adds that it might be safe to say that a workout for the Seahawks has been postponed indefinitely and may never happen.
  • Some have wondered if this news could strengthen Kaepernick’s collusion case against the NFL. However, Andrew Brandt mentions that the Seahawks can’t collude against themselves and the case will ultimately come down to whether there was a concerted action from one or more other teams to not sign him to a contract.
  • Mike Florio of PFT wonders if the Seahawks’ interest in Kaepernick may have been part of an effort to take his attorney, Mark Geragos, up on his offer to end the collusion case if his client was signed to a contract before things apparently backfired.
