College Coaching Candidates

Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report discussed some potential head coaching candidates from the college ranks who could be on NFL team’s short lists this offseason.

• David Shaw (Stanford) – Shaw could be considered the favorite by most teams to be the next college coach to leave for the NFL. However, Cole believes Shaw is likely to remain at Stanford for the time being given that he and his wife really like their current situation. Cole adds that there is a chance Shaw could be tempted by either the Raiders or 49ers coaching positions if they were to be available.
• Ken Sumlin (Texas A&M) – Cole doesn’t see Sumlin leaving Texas A&M due to family priorities. According to Cole, there is a belief that Sumlin is a better recruiter than an “X’s and O’s guy.“
• Art Briles (Baylor) – Cole refers to Briles as the “top guy” in terms of college coaches that are likely to make the job to the NFL next year. Cole specifically mentions that the Cowboys could have interest in him if he was available. Briles is a Texas guy, so that could weigh into his decision.

Giants

• Rookie WR Odell Beckham (hamstring) was running and cutting well during Monday’s practice. (Jordan Raanan)

Jets

Lions WR Golden Tate told reporters after Sunday’s game that the Jets ultimately decided to sign Eric Decker over him this past offseason.

“I’m glad that Detroit decided to take a chance,” Tate said, via the Detroit Free Press. “Funny thing is that the Jets had a chance to get me also. They were deciding between me and (Eric) Decker and they went with Decker, a heck of a player also. But thankful for the opportunity to be here and help contribute, help win games and bring that championship mentality.

Lions

• WR Calvin Johnson mentioned after Sunday’s game that he fully expects his ankle to be much better for their Week 5 match up. (Dave Birkett)
