NFL Notes: Contracts, Giants, Raiders

Contracts

  • Adam Schefter mentions that while there has been a lot of talkĀ about contracts being signed by NBA players right now, comparing them to NFL deal is “misguided.”
  • Schefter points out that NFL teams pay over 70 players each year while NBA teams have betweenĀ 12-15 players.
  • The NFL generates more revenue than the NBA, but it doesn’t divide out the same in terms of salaries due to the depth of their rosters.
  • Schefter adds that “theĀ piece of pie players get in each league when you take into account contracts, plus benefits, is similar for both.

Giants

  • According to James Kratch of NJ.com, it would be a “major surprise” if John Jerry lost the starting right guard job this summer, even with the addition of D.J. Fluker this offseason.
  • Kratch says it’s possible Fluker could see time at right tackle but the Giants appear to be optimistic about Bobby Hart and rookie Adam Bisnowaty could also be in the mix for the right tackle job.
  • Fluker’s contract includes only $1.5 million guaranteed and Kratch mentions that there’s no guarantee he’ll make the 53-man roster this summer.
  • Giants WRs Travis Rudolph, Roger Lewis, and Darius Powe are likely competing for one spot, according to Kratch, and there’s no guarantee that New York will again carry six receivers, which means they could be looking at entering the year with Sterling Shepard, Brandon Marshall, Odell Beckham, Dwayne Harris and Tavarres King with one more spot possibly being available.
  • Kratch expects Valentino Blake to get the first shot at the Giants’ No. 4 cornerback job, but he’ll still have to hold off Michael Hunter, Donte Deayon and rookies DaShaun Amos and Nigel Tribune.
