NFL Notes: Cowboys, Rams, Steelers & Texans

Cowboys

Though RB Darren McFadden is still considered “day-to-day” with a hamstring injury, Cowboys’ executive Stephen Jones said that McFadden could be attending practice, but the team prefers to keep a cautious standpoint with his recovery.

We want to make sure that he’s 110 percent,” said Jones, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think that’s been a little bit of his problem in the past. He wants to be out here and then comes out here 90 percent and then it doesn’t work out well. We want to make sure he’s 110 percent. He could very easily be out here right now, but we decided to not do it that way.

Rams

  • According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Marcus Roberson and S Rodney McLeod have all had strong training camps up to this point.
  • Wagoner has also been impressed with WR Brian Quick, who is coming off of a serious shoulder injury.
  • Wagoner mentions that no one has separated themselves in regards to the Rams’ center job.
  • Third-round pick Jamon Brown has been able to adjust to the speed of his opponents much faster than second-round pick Rob Havenstein.

Steelers

Backup QB Landry Jones will get a majority of snaps for the Steelers’ first preseason game, and could play the entire game.

He has had his moments before, but none more definitive than this in this part of his career,” said QB coach Randy Fichtner, via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “He is getting a whole lot of work with (first string), the (second string) and now is the time to let this all come together.”

Kaboly mentions that the Steelers are trying to determine if Jones could be Ben Roethlisberger‘s long-term backup.

His performance has been on a steady incline out there, but that is out there,” HC Mike Tomlin said. “We prepare and play out there for what transpires in stadiums, and I am excited to watch him play.”

Texans

  • John McClain reports that the Texans will look to sign another running back to add to the depth chart.

HC Bill O’Brien said that he views RB Chris Polk as a “three-down” running back.

I see him as a three-down back. He needs to be out there every day. He’s working hard to stay healthy,” said O’Brien, via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
