NFL Notes: Quarterbacks, Draft, Bills & Dolphins

Quarterbacks

  • According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the three quarterbacks worth keeping an eye on during the offseason are Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo, Bengals backup A.J. McCarron and Buccaneers backup Mike Glennon.
  • Of the three, Glennon is in the best position to cash in, considering that he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. Schefter believes Glennon could command as much as $13-$15 million per year in his next contract and possibly more, depending how many teams get involved.
  • As for Garappolo and McCarron, they both could be on the trading block. A source did, however, tell Schefter last week that he would be “stunned” if New England traded Garoppolo, so it’s possible that the trade buzz may be all for not.

Draft

An NFC scouting director believes Texas RB D’Onta Foreman would’ve benefited from another year in college and his coaches have major concerns about his pass protection.

“I think he would have benefited by staying in school another year,” the scouting director tells Lance Zierlein of ESPN. “He’s awful in pass protection. Our coaches won’t put him out there if they think he’ll get the quarterback (hurt). He has ability as a runner, but I think it’s going to take a while for him to become a factor.”

One of the interesting prospects garnering some attention in recent weeks is Wisconsin LT Ryan Ramczyk. An NFC scout tells Zierlein that he’ll benefit from his time at Wisconsin and the fact that he held up well against solid edge rushers this year.

“He’s really athletic and he’s really smart. There are a lot of Wisconsin linemen who start in the league because they learn an NFL system and they are taught the right way,” said the NFC scout. “He played against Arden Key (LSU), Sam Hubbard (Ohio State) and Taco Charlton (Michigan). This guy is battle tested against three future first-rounders.

Bills

Bills GM Doug Whaley mentioned during an interview with WGR 550 that management and ownership has not issued a statement backing HC Rex Ryan because they’re “focused on the games.

“Let’s put it this way: None of us know our future,” Whaley told WGR 550, via ESPN.com. “Look where we are. We owe it to our fans and our owners to keep it focused on Miami, because we’re still in this.”

  • Whaley also said that the reports he and Ryan are “at odds at each other” are “totally ridiculous.” (Mike Rodak)

Dolphins

  • Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill is taking a proactive approach to his knee injury and has visited with noted surgeon James Andrews this week for treatment on his left knee.
  • Jackson says that Tannehill is “making every effort to get well quickly” and the Dolphins are still holding out some hope he could return if they make the playoffs. However, Miami still won’t put him in a position to jeopardize his long-term future.
  • As of now, Jackson mentions that the Dolphins have received no indication that Tannehill’s knee injury will require surgery.
