NFL Notes: Draft, Bills, Tyrod Taylor, Cowboys, Giants, Saints

Draft

  • Sources tell Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com that Western Michigan WR Corey Davis was “neck-and-neck” as the top receiver in this year’s class with Clemson’s Mike Williams. Pauline adds that Davis’ ankle injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for him.
  • In regards to Iowa DB Desmond King, Pauline says that the more people he speaks to, the more it appears King has “locked himself out of the first round and now projects as a day-two/round-two player.” Pauline adds that many feel King was “badly exposed” at the Senior Bowl and has limitations than first thought.
  • Interestingly enough, Pauline reports that buzz is building for Utah OT Garett Bolles and several sources have told him that Bolles could be the best left tackle in the draft. Pauline wouldn’t be surprised if he came off of the board in the top half of round one.

Bills

  • Bills QB Tyrod Taylor admitted during an appearance on the team’s radio show that he still waiting to see whether “management chooses to keep [me] around.” (Mike Rodak)
  • Taylor added that he wants to return to the Bills next year and is currently focused on rehabbing from the groin surgery he underwent a month ago: “If I didn’t have to rehab, I’d probably be thinking about [my future] all the time.

Cowboys

  • One name to watch at this year’s Combine could be Texas A&M DB Justin Evans, whom Pauline believes could “blow up the combine and put up Byron Jones type numbers.”
  • As of now, there’s reportedly a belief that Evans could end up being a late first-round pick and he’s been linked to the Cowboys, per Pauline.

Giants

  • Pauline previously reported that the Giants were high on South Alabama TE Gerald Everett. Pauline now says that he’s been alerted that New York is also “very high” on Miami TE David Njoku.

Saints

Saints HC Sean Payton emphasized that they need to continue to target help on the defensive side of the ball this offseason.

“We have to improve our defense,” Payton said on Good Morning Football, via NFL.com. “I was just asked this question earlier on the show. Specifically, we’ve got to find a way to get a couple pressure players in this draft. I think this draft is a pretty strong draft defensively when you’re looking at safety, when you’re looking at corner. It’s a strong draft at running back as well. But I think both in free agency and the draft, we’ve got to help that side of the ball. This is the year we finished in a lot of tough games and had some tough losses. But I love the draft class we just had and we need to partner with another good one.”
