NFL Notes: Draft, Browns, Buccaneers, Jets, Seahawks

Draft

  • Florida State CB Ronald Darby will enter the 2015 NFL Draft. (Rand Getlin)
  • Texas DT Malcolm Brown will enter the 2015 NFL Draft. (Rand Getlin)

Browns

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that former OC Kyle Shanahan wanted out of Cleveland because of the friction between some coaches and a few members of the team’s  front office.

According to Cabot, Shanahan wanted to sign veteran a quarterback like Matt Schaub last year to add some depth, and then target a receiver in draft after Josh Gordon was suspended.

Cabot mentions that Shanahan and other offensive coaches were “dismayed” when they waived WR Charles Johnson, who would go on to have a decent season with the Vikings.

Previous reports had mentioned that the front office’s preference for them to play rookie QB Johnny Manziel caused some friction, but according to Cabot, coaching Manziel was not a deciding factor for Shanahan leaving.

Buccaneers

  • Albert Breer mentions that with the Buccaneers hiring Dirk Koetter as their new offensive coordinator, Florida State QB Jameis Winston would make more sense for them than Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

Jets

  • Brian Costello has heard from sources that consultant Ron Wolf took the lead in their interview with Texans scouting director Mike Maccagnan, due Charlie Casserly’s familiarity with him.
  • According to Costello, Wolf the went very well and he came away “very impressed” with Maccagnan.
  • Maccagnan is scheduled to be back for a second interview in the coming days.

Seahawks

  • Seahawks signed LB Mike Zimmer to their practice squad.
  • Seahawks released DT Jimmy Staten from their practice squad.
