NFL Notes: Draft, Chargers, Titans, Bills & Jets

Draft

Following the news that Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd plans to transfer and switch positions at some point, an NFC personnel executive tells Lance Zierlein that he still believes Hurd would be a mid-round pick next year.

“I can’t wait to find out the behind the scenes stuff because something isn’t right. I thought he was going to be the breakout star but he’s not even the best running back at Tennessee now,” the personnel executive said. “I think he’s still a middle-rounder if he came out (for the NFL draft) this year, but I don’t get the idea of switching positions at another school. That’s a decision you let an NFL team make.

Chargers & Titans

Before last year’s draft, rumors were circulating that the Chargers could trade veteran QB Philip Rivers to the Titans for the No. 2 overall pick, which would allow them to draft Marcus Mariota. Of course, no deal was completed and the Chargers eventually locked up Rivers long-term, which should allow him to finish out his career in San Diego.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Chargers ownership ultimately decided that they wanted to have Rivers remain the cornerstone of their franchise, especially considering that they’re still trying to secure funding for a downtown stadium in San Diego.

Bills

Jets

Jets HC Todd Bowles mentioned that newly signed RB C.J. Spiller’s familiarness with OC Chan Gailey’s offense will obviously help him, but it’s still “too early to tell” whether he’ll be active on Sunday.

Obviously, he’s played in the offense,” Bowles said Wednesday, via Pro Football Talk. “He knows some things. He can catch the ball. He can run the ball. [He’s a] third option. He can return kicks if need be. He gives a little more variety.”
