NFL Notes: Draft, Colts, Jets

Draft

Former NFL GM Charlie Casserly spoke with oneĀ general manager who expects there to be two quarterbacks drafted in the top 9 picks.

“I had a general manager tell me that two quarterbacks will be taken before the Buffalo Bills pick at No. 10,” said Casserly, via NFL.com. “Two quarterbacks in the top nine. That’d be a shocker.

  • Indiana RB Devine Redding worked out privately for Colts, Cardinals, Browns, and is drawing interest from the Saints and Vikings. (Aaron Wilson)
  • TheĀ Eagles have been in contact with Texas Tech TE Tyler Scalzi this week. (Aaron Wilson)
  • TheĀ Dolphins contacted Alabama State RB Marquell Beckwith this week. (Aaron Wilson)
  • The Raiders contacted Northwest Missouri State K Simon MathiesenĀ this week. (Aaron Wilson)

Colts

  • Colts GM ChrisĀ Ballard told reporters that there have been a couple calls from teams about possible trade down scenarios. Ballard added that they have just been feelers up to this point and there’s nothing concrete right now. (Stephen Holder)
  • Ballard also mentioned that they need length and size at cornerback and he would like to find some with good hands, as dropped interceptions negate “game-changing plays.”Ā (Stephen Holder)

Jets

  • Rich Cimini of ESPN believes the rumors of the Jets and Browns discussing a potential trade involving the No. 6 and No. 12 overall picks are true and points out that GM Mike Maccagnan typically is in talks with teams around him in the draft at this time of year.
  • Cimini says that the Jets are actively looking to trade down in round one and the Browns make a lot of sense as a potential trade partner, depending of course on how things play out to open the draft.
  • The of a move up has been centered around UNC QB Mitch Trubisky being available, but the closer we get to the draft, the more it seems like there’s no guarantee he’ll last until No. 6 overall.
  • If Cimini was in charge, he would trade back and accumulate more draft picks and all the Browns to “make the mistake of overdrafting a quarterback with only 13 career starts.
  • As for what New York would be looking for in return for the No. 6 pick, Cimini mentions that the Jets likely have their sights set on Cleveland’s No. 33 overall pick, but he also thinks the Browns are likely resisting a trading involving this pick. A deal that could work for the two parties would be the Browns trading No. 12 and No. 53 overall for No. 6.
  • By moving back six picks, the Jets could be in position to grab someone such as OSU CB Gareon Conley, Alabama TE O.J. Howard, Clemson WR Mike Williams, and Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey.
  • With another second-round pick to work with, Cimini suggests possibly trading back into round one if a quarterback such as Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes are still available to them.
