NFL Notes: Eagles, Jets & Texans

Eagles

  • Eagles HC Doug Pederson told reporters that they are in the process of looking for help at inside linebacker. (Eliot Shorr-Parks)
  • Pedereson added that undrafted rookie Don Cherry would be their backup middle linebacker following the season-ending ACL injury for Joe Walker. (Jeff McLane)
  • In regards to rookie QB Carson Wentz (ribs), Pederson said he’s day to day. (Jeff McLane)
  • Eagles WR Jordan Matthews said he “for sure” will be back for the team’s season opener. (Jeff McLane)

Jets

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News writes that Bryce Petty has earned a roster spot and should be given a chance to compete for the team’s backup quarterback job with Geno Smith.

Jets HC Todd Bowles wouldn’t call it a competition right now, but admitted that anyone can for a job.

“I didn’t say there wasn’t a competition,” Bowles said. “Right now, Geno is two and Bryce is three…. Anybody can push anybody for any job… Every position is open.

Texans

Texans HC Bill O’Brien mentioned that Tom Savage would be their No. 2 quarterback, ahead of veteran Brandon Weeden as of now.

I would say right now it’s Tom Savage, I think he’s number two right now,” O’Brien said Thursday, via HoustonTexans.com. “But that’s not to say that (Brandon) Weeden hasn’t done a good job. I think Weeden has really improved. Tom has been in our system for three years, Weeden’s only been in it for about eight months or close to a year. Tom’s a little bit ahead in that regard but both guys, what stands out to me about both guys as backup players is that they really throw the ball very, very well. They spin the ball very nicely.”
