NFL Notes: Giants, Jets, Lions, & Redskins

Giants

Jets

  • According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, there’s “virtually no chance” of the Jets trading veteran DL Muhammad Wilkerson during the offseason, as his contract is just too prohibitive to move in a deal.
  • Cimini points out that the Jets would take a cap hit of $12 million next year by trading Wilkerson, which means they would ultimately pick up $6 million of cap room, seeing has he’s set to count $18 million against their cap next year.
  • The main problem, according to Cimini, would be finding another team willing to take on Wilkerson’s remaining four years at $64 million.
  • Cimini says that Wilkerson has been dealing with complications from offseason surgery to repair a fractured fibula, which explains his dip in production.
  • As for the Jets possibly moving on from Wilkerson, Cimini says their first real opportunity will come in March of 2018.

Lions

  • Despite the Lions’ defensive struggles this season, Michael Rothstein doesn’t see them making any changes to the coaching staff during the season.

Redskins

  • John Keim mentions that the Achilles’ injury sustained by rookie WR Josh Doctson has impacted their plans at receiver, considering that Doctson will essentially still be a rookie next year, given how much time he’s missed.
  • The Redskins face decision regarding veteran WR Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson and Keim wouldn’t be surprised if one or both players are gone in 2017.
  • Of the two, Keim considers Jackson to be the more interesting situation to watch, Washington loves his speed and what he brings to their offense. However, he’s a small receiver who will by 30 years old next year, so there are some questions with investing big money in him.
  • Keim believes Garcon could hold up better in the coming years, but his role in the team’s offense could lead to him looking for a new opportunity next year.
