NFL Notes: Giants, Patriots, Steelers

Giants

Giants new HC Pat Shurmur said he plans to hire his offensive coordinator at some point this week.

We’ve got a few (assistants) in the building, and we’ll finish up the hiring process (this) week,” Shurmur said Saturday at NFL Honors awards show, via Dan Duggan of NJ.com. “Then we’ll all get to work.”

  • A report from last week mentioned that Shurmur is waiting on Vikings QBs coach Kevin Stefanski before hiring someone for the team’s offensive coordinator vacancy. (NFLTR)
  • Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo and RBs coach Duce Staley have also come up as candidates for the Giants job.

Patriots

Patriots CB Malcolm Butler took responsibility for his play this season and says no one’s to blame other than himself.

“Anything that happened to me is my fault,” Butler said, via Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com. “It has nothing to do with anything else, it’s possible to just have a s—-y season. It is what it is. I’m just worried about the Eagles.”

“Compared to the rest of them, I do [think that],” Butler added. “I have high standards, I didn’t meet my goals. I just feel that way. There were ups and downs, a lack of consistency. But this isn’t about me; this is about the team. That’s how it is. It’s a production business. I just want to win this game. That’s what’s most important.”

We have Butler featured in our Top 100  – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.

Steelers

Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell mentioned during an interview with CBS Sports Radio that some of his teammates weren’t ready to play against the Jaguars.

“I did [have energy], but you can’t control everybody,” Bell said. “I did. I wanted that game badly. Certain guys out there was not ready to play football. I mean, don’t get me wrong, guys woke up in the second half, but it’s kind of too late.

  • On Friday, Bell said he’s “tired” of trying to get a long-term agreement: “I just wanna get a deal done. I’m tired of having to deal with this every year.” (NFLTR)
  • We have Bell featured in our Top 100  – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
  • According to Ian Whetstone, the Steelers signed P Jordan Berry to a one-year, $1.887 million contract, which is equal to the minimum possible value for the low restricted tender this year. (NFLTR)
