NFL Notes: Greg Hardy, Wes Welker, Los Angeles, Eagles, & Redskins

Greg Hardy

Texas congressman Michael Burgess is asking the NFL why Cowboys DE Greg Hardy is allowed to play after photos were released showing the injuries sustained by his then-girlfriend in a 2014 domestic assault.

These photos are disturbing,” Burgess said in a statement on Tuesday, via theHill.com. “I want the NFL and the Players Association [NFLPA] to explain why it’s acceptable for Greg Hardy to still be playing.

“The newly released photographs provide a new opportunity to understand and discuss the NFL and NFLPA’s domestic violence policies and how they are being implemented,” Burgess said. “…I look forward to sitting down with both the NFL and NFLPA to better understand this situation and what can be done to ensure that those who put their hands on a woman or child are not rewarded.”

NFL responded with the following statement, per Albert Breer:

We have provided the congressman’s staff with the information on our programs and policies that address domestic violence and sexual assault. We will visit him in person as soon as possible to update him on any issue of interest.

Deadspin also released the transcribed from the NFL’s hearing with Hardy on Wednesday and is worth a read, if you’re interested in the matter.

Wes Welker

Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report spoke to numerous executives from around the league who said that they wished veteran WR Wes Welker remained retired and didn’t risk another concussion.

I’m really scared for Wes,” an executive texted Freeman after the Rams signed him to a contract.

Even a former teammate expressed concern for his well-being, saying: “I hope he just gets through this OK.”

Los Angeles

  • Jets owner Woody Johnson said a vote regarding the future of the NFL in Los Angeles could come after January and as late as March of next year. (Jason Cole)
  • According to Cole, NFL owners came away today’s meeting with even less clarity than they had before about which teams will ultimately end up in Los Angles.

Eagles

  • Les Bowen reports that while Eagles LT Jason Peters‘ back is improving, his condition is degenerative, which means he’ll have to deal with it the rest of his career.

Redskins

Both Redskins HC Jay Gruden and OLB Junior Galette said they’re interested in him being back in Washington next year.

“We obviously would love to get him back if we can,” Gruden said, via Evan Woodbery of the Times-Picayune .

Galette signed a one-year contract after being released by the Saints in the offseason, but suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during a preseason practice.
