NFL Notes: Zach Mettenberger, Jaguars, Patriots, & Saints

Zach Mettenberger

Zac Jackson of Pro Football Talk takes a look at some teams who could place a waiver claim for former Titans QB Zach Mettenberger.

Jackson’s list of speculative options includes: the Browns, Cowboys, 49ers, Colts, Cardinals, Lions, Steelers and Broncos.

Jaguars

  • Jaguars signed fourth-round DT Sheldon Day to a four-year deal.

Patriots

Free agent DE/OLB Dwight Freeney didn’t rule out the possibility of signings with the Patriots if that were to be an option in an interview with Peter King.

“Well, that’s hard to fathom,” Freeney told King, “But I’m not against Bill. I understand the dynamic involved, but at the end of the day this is a business. My first allegiance right now is to Arizona, if they’re interested. But if it happened that I ended up in New England, I can tell you, both sides would win.

However, Mike Reiss mentions that the Patriots are loaded at defensive and with Freeney not offering much as a special teams player, it’s unlikely that New England would be a strong option for him.

  • Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that Patriots WR Danny Amendola underwent surgery to repair the left knee, and had a bone spur removed in his ankle this offseason.
  • According to Howe, Amendola is expected to be ready in time for training camp, but there’s still no guarantee he’ll ready for the start of the regular season.

Saints

  • Evan Woodbery reports that while the Saints did not sign Tulane DE Royce LaFrance to a contract following his recent tryout, they were impressed enough with his workout to invite him to their OTAs.
