NFL Notes: Jen Welter, Cardinals, Jaguars, & Redskins

Jen Welter

Cardinals intern coach Jen Welter referred to her opportunity with the team as “a complete win.

“It’s been fantastic,” Welter said, via FOX Sports. “This is such a good group of guys who I think really embraced what could have been a challenging situation, and they just ran with it. I mean these players and these coaches have just been fantastic for me. It’s been like a dream come true.”

“I am waiting to see what will happen next and I’m really excited,” Welter said. “I consider this a complete win. The biggest question coming in was would guys in the NFL respond to a woman coaching them, and the obvious answer is yes.”

Welter added that she would like to secure a full-time coaching job at the NFL level.

“I would love to entertain other teams, an opportunity to stay obviously in the game because it’s been a part of me for so long, and that’s really exciting to see,” Welter said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled as to where I am right now because it really did show something to the world.

Cardinals

A source tells Josina Anderson of ESPN that Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (hamstring) status for Sunday’s game is that he’ll likely be a game-time decision.

“The trainer will run test him on Sunday before the game to see if he can go,” Anderson’s source said of Johnson. “[T]he head trainer will make the call as to his health status but (head coach Bruce Arians) will make the final call if the trainer says he’s healthy.”

Even if Johnson is cleared to play, there’s still a chance he could be held out.

“If he can, I still think we would hold him until next Thursday…for his sake I wouldn’t want to see him play with the third offensive line (either),” the source said. “He did very little of anything, light individual drills and one play of offense where it looked like he was walking….Let’s not call what he did (Friday) as a practice. It was one play out of about 80 total offensive plays.

Jaguars

  • Jaguars DE Andre Branch will undergo an MRI on his left knee. Branch was seen using crutches after the game, but told teammates that he didn’t need then. (Florida Times Union)

Redskins

  • The Redskins will start QB Kirk Cousins during tonight’s preseason game, according to numerous reports.
  • Albert Breer mentions that the Redskins plan to play Cousins entire first half.
