NFL Notes: Jeremy Maclin, Chiefs, Jets, Lions

Jeremy Maclin

  • Jason Fitzgerald expects free agent WR Jeremy Maclin to secure around $5 million or so on the open market, which is half of what he was set to make for the 2017 season.
  • As for the Chiefs, Fitzgerald says that this is “one of the worse signings” in recent memory, given that Kansas City will have paid him $23 million for 1,624 yards and 10 touchdowns in two years and will carry cap hits of $2.4 million (2017) and $4.8 million (2018).
  • We have him featured in our Top 50 Available Free Agents list.

Jets

  • Rich Cimini of ESPN writes that there was a cap-related element to the Jets recent trade for LB Demario Davis in which they parted with S Calvin Pryor.
  • None of Davis’ $3.7 million salary is guaranteed, which means the Jets could release before the start of the season and incur no cap hit.
  • Cimini’s hunch is that the Jets will approach Davis about a pay cut before the start of the season if they want to keep him around as a backup linebacker.
  • According to Cimini, Davis could be a solid insurance option for the Jets in case something happens to David Harris.

Lions

  • According to Michael Rothstein, rookie WR Kenny Golladay has been one of the standouts from the team’s OTA practices open to the media. Rothstein says that the Lions have to feel good about this pick and he should be their No. 3 receiver this year and a “legitimate red-zone threat.”
  • Rothstein says that rookie TE Michael Roberts has been working as the Lions’ No. 3 tight end right now behind Eric Ebron and Darren Fells.
  • As for second-round CB Teez Tabor, Rothstein mentions that he hasn’t done much up to this point and he wouldn’t be surprised if Tabor doesn’t play much this year with Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson their starters to go along with a number of slot cornerback options.
  • Jamal Agnew has a “good shot” to win the Lions return job and compete for the slot corner spot, according to Rothstein.
