NFL Notes: Jets, Redskins, Arian Foster & Vikings

Jets

  • Brian Costello of the New York Post writes that former third-round G Brian Winters is entering a make-or-break season for the Jets.
  • Costello mentions that should be able to win the starting right guard job coming out of the preseason, but with him in the final year of his rookie deal, he’ll have a lot to prove in 2016 and earn a new deal from New York.

Redskins

  • Rich Tandler of CSN Mid Atlantic would be surprised to see the Redskins show interest in free agent RB Arian Foster, considering his injury history and the kind of money he could be looking for.
  • Tandler admits that things could change as training camp and the preseason play out, so he’s not completely ruling it out.

Vikings

  • Ben Goessling of ESPN writes that Vikings sixth-round WR Moritz Böhringer could open the season on the team’s practice squad, which would give him more time to learn the team’s playbook and get acclimated to the NFL game.
  • This would, of course, require Böhringer to pass through waivers unclaimed, but Goessling mentions that NFL teams would have a tough time keeping a developmental player on their 53-man roster.
  • While the Vikings have had Andre Smith and Phil Loadholt both working with the first-team offense during offseason workouts, Goessling would give the edge to Smith for the start of training camp.
  • Goessling points out that the Vikings included $1 million guaranteed as part of his $3.5 million deal while Loadholt has no guaranteed money remaining in his agreement.
If they elect to go with Smith as their starting right tackle, Goessling believes Loadholt’s lack of position versatility could work against him securing a roster spot.
