NFL Notes: Joe Mixon, Brad Kaaya, Jaguars, Packers

Joe Mixon

An NFC scout tells Lance Zierlein that he considers Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon to be a top-40 talent in this year’s draft, but he obviously won’t be selected that high once teams factor in character concerns and the video of him punching a female student.

“I’m not going to talk about any character issues because every team has to go through and make their own decisions. As a player, he can play all three downs, but he’s not going to create for himself like (Leonard) Fournette or (Dalvin) Cook. But he can also have an impact on the passing game that they can’t have,” the NFC scout said. “I see him as a top-40 player. Obviously, he won’t go there.”

Brad Kaaya

An NFC personnel director tells Lance Zierlein that Miami QB Brad Kaaya will likely be overdrafted based on his personality or intangibles.

I really love his mental makeup and I want to like him more as a prospect,” said the personnel director. “I just think someone is going to overdraft the person or the intangibles. At the end of the day, he has to throw with better accuracy and velocity or he’ll be just another guy.

Jaguars

  • Jaguars owner Shad Khan announced that Tom Coughlin will oversee all facets of the football operation, which implies he has control of the 53-man roster. (Ian Rapoport)

  • Coughlin told reporters that Blake Bortles is “our quarterback.” (John Oehser)
  • In regards to the decision to hire Doug Marrone as their head coach, Khan said: “With respect to the other candidates, it wasn’t close. Our choice was Doug Marrone.” (Albert Breer)
  • Alex Marvez reports that Coughlin has blocked Marrone from hiring Donnie Henderson to his coaching staff. Marvez mentions that Coughlin and Henderson had a blowup at a 2005 scrimmage.
  • According to Marvez, Marrone wants to hire Bills special teams coach Danny Crossman but hasn’t received Coughlin’s approval yet.
  • Marvez says that Coughlin wants Marrone to interview at least three external candidates for every Jaguars’ staff position member he wants to keep.

Packers

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers indicated that WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) is likely going to miss the team’s Divisional Round game against the Cowboys.

“It’s tough,” Rodgers said Wednesday, via ESPN.com. “We’ve played a lot of football together. You realize how important these opportunities are, how they don’t come around every single year. We feel great about our team. Obviously, we feel better with 87 in the lineup. He’s a classy guy and a great teammate. I was with him last night and the night before. He’s staying positive and he’s hopeful.

“We’re going to try to get this one and hopefully get him back if he can’t play this week.

  • On Thursday, Packers HC Mike McCarthy said that Nelson is “making progress” and is still targeting Saturday to practice. (Ryan Wood)
