NFL Notes: Joe Mixon, Chargers, Jaguars, Packers & Rams

Joe Mixon

Mike Freeman reported Thursday evening that various NFL team sources he’s spoken to have insisted that no team will draft Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon.

However, Mixon tells Jake Trotter that he got a first-round grade from the NFL advisory committee, which explains why he elected to enter the 2017 draft.

Mixon’s agent, Peter Schaffer, tells Trotter that Mixon will have to prove to teams that he’s worthy of being selected, but he believes someone will take a chance on him.

“What the NFL teams have said is they all have an open mind to try and explore who Joe Mixon is, and Joe is going to have the next ostensibly five months to prove to people that he’s worth it, the second chance he’s been blessed with,” said Schaffer. “The ball is in his court. What he does between now and the draft will determine his draft position.

“From everything I’ve seen I think he’s going to impress a great deal, every team. I think that as long as they have an open mind to explore the type of person he is and how remorseful he is for his actions, I think that not only is he going to have a great career, but he’s going to be able to make a great impact to any community he goes to.”

Chargers

• Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub will interview with the Chargers Sunday.

Jaguars

• Ian Rapoport reports that the Jaguars met with interim HC Doug Marrone all day and late into the night on Thursday. Rapoport adds that the meeting went well.

Packers

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Packers director of football operations Eliot Wolf was disappointed by GM Ted Thompson’s decision to prevent him from interviewing with the Lions last year for their GM vacancy.

Beyond that, McGinn adds that even Thompson’s former boss, Ron Wolf, “wasn’t pleased at all” with the decision.

A source explained to McGinn that the timing of everything likely impacted Thompson’s decision last year.

“Ted’s about timing,” a league source tells McGinn. “He understands growth and maturation. I just think Ted said (to Wolf), ‘You know what? It’s your time.’ The non-division team was huge, too.”

 

Rams

• Ian Rapoport reports that the Rams’ defensive coaching staff is hoping that the team will bring in an offensive-minded coach and retain them, as opposed to overhauling the entire staff.
