NFL Notes: Johnny Manziel, Derrick Johnson, Free Agency

Johnny Manziel

  • Earlier in the day, former Browns QB Johnny Manziel announced that he has signed a contract to participate in The Spring League (NFLTR).
  • According to Jeremy Fowler, Manziel’s work with the Spring League is not expected to affect his plans to possibly sign with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, which are still in the works.
  • Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, tells Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that his client can leave The Spring League if he gets an opportunity with an NFL team beforehand.

Derrick Johnson

Veteran ILB Derrick Johnson joined Sirius XM NFL Radio on Wednesday following the news that the Chiefs plan to move on from him this offseason.

Johnson said it’s “tough” to be in the position but he’s hoping to join a contender and compete for a championship in 2018.

“It’s tough departing the Chiefs,” Johnson said. “Wish it could last forever but that isn’t the reality of it. The only regret I have is not bringing KC a championship. I’m like a fish out of water w/FA but I do want to go somewhere I can win a championship. I want to play.

We have him featured in our Top 100  – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.

Free Agency

A top team executive tells Jason La Canfora that this year’s free agent class is among the worst groups of free agents he’s seen since he’s been in his position.

“On paper, it’s the worst group of free agents I’ve seen since I’ve been doing this,” the executive tells La Canfora.

La Canfora mentions that skill positions are particularly limited in available talent. However, La Canfora says that teams could to the trade market and wait for players to be released in the coming months.

Some teams are loaded with cap space and La Canfora believes they could not only set the market at key positions in free agency, but also aggressively seek trades with teams in a cap crunch.
