NFL Notes: Josh Dobbs, Giants, Patriots, Titans

Josh Dobbs

  • Jeremy Fowler reports that the Seahawks and Vikings were believed to be among teams that considered new Steelers QB Josh Dobbs on Day 3 of the draft.

Giants

  • Ralph Vacchiano of SNY mentions that the Giants “loved” Alabama TE O.J. Howard and Utah OT Garrett Bolles and there was support for Florida LB Jarrad Davis and Missouri DE Charles Harris in the team’s war room, but all of these players came off the board right before them.
  • According to Vacchiano, it doesn’t sound like the Giants had any substantial trade talks about trading up for either Howard or Bolles, as it would have cost them at least a third-round pick.
  • Instead, they got Ole Miss TE Evan Engram and Cal QB Davis Webb by staying put.
  • Multiple team sources tell Vacchiano that the Giants were “zeroed in” on Bolles at No. 23 and were hoping the Broncos preferred Cam Robinson or Ryan Ramczyk.
  • Vacchiano says that the report of the Giants trying to trade up for Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes is not accurate. But they would have considered him at No. 23 overall.
  • While the Giants have been monitoring the veteran running back market, including RB LeGarrette Blount.
  • Vacchiano believes their decision to draft Clemson RB Wayne Gallman in the fourth round may have closed that window.
  • Even so, a team source didn’t completely rule out the Giants signing Blount at some point.
  • Vacchiano mentions that it’s hard to see what Geno Smith‘s future with the Giants is now that they’ve drafted Davis. Vacchiano considers Josh Johnson to be the leader in the clubhouse for No. 3 quarterback spot over Smith, considering that he knows the team’s offense.

Patriots

The Patriots posted an interesting graphic that shows how they used all of their draft picks this year.

Titans

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Titans let go respected Director of College Scouting Blake Beddingfield on Monday.
  • Paul Kuharsky reports that Titans college scout Tim Ruskell was offered a contract extension in February but declined it. He will now be a free agent after June.
