NFL Notes: Josh Gordon, Robert Mathis, Jaguars, & Titans

Josh Gordon

Browns legendary RB Jim Brown said he’s spoken to suspended WR Josh Gordon in the past month and was encouraged by what he heard.

“I’ve talked with Josh twice on the phone, and the last time I talked with him he sounded very motivated and I think he was in rehab and feeling good about it and discovering some things about himself,” Brown told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “He really seemed ready to take responsibility for himself.

“His way of expressing himself, the responsibility he was taking made me feel really very motivated about his chance of getting back,” Brown added.

Robert Mathis

Long-time Colts OLB Robert Mathis admitted he plans to be a “realist” about his future after this season.

“I have to be a realist about it,” Mathis said, via Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star. “It’s Year 14. I’m coming to the end of the road. You’ve got to enjoy the time while you’ve got it.”

According to Mathis, he plans to wait until after the year is out before making a decision about possibly calling it a career.

I’ll tally it up at the end of the season,” Mathis said. “If I feel I should walk away, then that’s what I should do. But if not, I’m gonna keep playing.”

Jaguars

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell told Tom Pelissero of USA Today that they have “zero” concerns regarding first-round CB Jalen Ramsey and his knee injury. In fact, Caldwell said that Ramsey is “doing great right now and will be 100% ready for camp.

“Even Dr. (James) Andrews said this little meniscus deal, it won’t affect him at all, considering the part of the knee it was in and how small (the tear) was,” Caldwell said of Ramsey.

  • Caldwell also said that second-round LB Myles Jack (knee) is “doing really well” right now.

Titans

Titans third-round S Kevin Byard, who is the last remaining Titans’ draft pick to sign his rookie deal, said he’s waiting on the team.

“I don’t know, man. At the end of the day, we’re waiting on the Titans,” Byard said, via Jason Wolf of the Tennessean. “My agent is waiting on the Titans. I’m just playing football. I’m not getting too much into the contract talks. He told me to be patient, continue to play football and it’s going to get done. It’s going to get done soon. It’s not like we’re trying to hold out intentionally or anything. It’s going to get done though, most definitely.”
