NFL Notes: Los Angeles, Chargers, & Texans

Los Angeles

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell referred to the proposed stadium solutions in Oakland, St. Louis and San Diego as “unsatisfactory and inadequate” to keep the Raiders, Rams and Chargers in their home markets, via Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.

Goodell said that each home market had “ample opportunity but did not develop their proposals sufficiently to ensure the retention of its NFL team.”

  • According to Jason La Canfora, the Chargers have been firmly bound to the Raiders with their Carson project and team owner Dean Spanos wrote to the L.A. committee to express that close to a month ago.
  • However, La Canfora reports that many owners strongly prefer a Rams and Chargers coupling in Los Angeles, but there are trust issues between those clubs.

Regarding the proposal by the Cowboys for the Chargers to join the Rams as part of the Inglewood project, Chargers owner Dean Spanos says he’s not interested.

I have reviewed the letter you received dated December 1, 2015 from Stan Kroenke,” Spanos wrote in a Dec. 7 letter to the Los Angeles committee obtained by the Orange County Register. “Nothing in Stan’s letter gives me any reason to reconsider my partnership with Mark Davis and our stadium site. I firmly believe that the proposal we have jointly made is in the best interests of the entire League and is in complete compliance with the League’s relocation policies. I write to respectfully reaffirm our strong partnership and my abiding desire to help the National Football League’s return to Los Angeles in the most successful way.”

Chargers

Chargers GM Tom Telesco said that they do have work to do in regards to their roster this offseason.

We’ve got some work to do,” Telesco said, via ESPN.com. “We do think there are some positives here. We do have a core group of young players that have gotten better during the year. We’ve got players like Philip [Rivers] and [Antonio] Gates that are still playing at a high level. But obviously we need to continue to add to that.”

  • According to Telesco, they haven’t interviewed former offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt for his old position.
  • Regarding free agent S Eric Weddle, Telesco said: “He’s stated he’s ready to move on. And probably for all parties involved, that’s probably the best case.”
  • However, Telesco did say that they plan on being in contact with TE Antonio Gates: “At the appropriate time we’ll be in touch with Antonio and his agent. And hopefully we’d like him to finish here.”

  1. Mr Spanos, do not sell yourself out to the NFL, not for any amount of money. Stank is one of the most unethical people on the earth. Stay far away from him.
